THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ
BOOK DESIGN
CHALLENGE
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is the classic story about a tornado that sweeps Dorothy and her dog, Toto, to the colorful land of Oz. L. Frank Baum, the author of this book, said "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was written solely to pleasure children. It aspires to be a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heart-aches and nightmares are left out." Loose Leaf Press is commissioning a total book design, including the book jacket, endsheets, interior guts layout, and EPUB version.
SOLUTION
This total book design is a contemporary representation of the classic story. The book jacket depicts a scene in the book where the travelers come across a field of poppies. "All across the meadows, many poppies blossomed, and that were so hypnotic and brilliant in color they nearly dazzled Dorothy's eyes. 'Aren't they beautiful?' the girl asked her companions, as she breathed in the spicy scent of the big, bright flowers." The front book cover represents this scene by illustrating Dorothy's hand lying in a field of poppy flowers that are planted across the book jacket. As the reader turns the book to the back, they will see Dorothy's arm transform into the yellow brick road.
